The addition was a six-story, 225,000 square foot patient tower. The structural system for this addition was conventionally reinforced poured-in-place concrete with beams and girders on the column grids only. There was a large interstitial space above the OR suite level that was designed for future hybrid OR flexibility. The roof included extensive penthouses and solar panels integrated with mechanical utility raceways. The biggest challenge for this project was designing the six-story connector from the new construction back to the existing patient floors. New columns had to be threaded down through existing occupied spaces below and designed with new foundations capable of handling the wind and seismic lateral loads. There was also extensive work to modify the existing building structure at the interface of construction.
